<pcaption caption="Old Rag Mountain is the most challenging hike we've taken. It is about 7.5 mile hike, climbing about 2100 feet. While just climbing that much is tiring, it was the rock scrambles that were, as they say, technically challenging -- which means if you make a mistake you can break a bone -- or worse, G-d forbid. The lessons I learned from this hike: 1. If I OVERestimate myself, I will probably pay a price for it. 2. If I UNDERestimate myself, I will never learn what I am truly capable of. 3. If the trail is rough, stop before I look up, but it is important to look up, because there is more to the path than rocks. 4. Trust the guidebook. Others have gone before and know the path. I can learn from them. 5: For the climb to become easier, it is I who must change. The mountain will not."/>

As I recited blessings after the meal, I wondered if perhaps our trek here was to accomplish just that: To bring a bit of holiness to this beautiful natural sanctuary. It was physically refreshing as well: I took off my shoes and soaked my feet in one of the pools. Cool, but not cold. It felt really good. "/>

<pcaption caption="This is a view looking back from near where we ate lunch. A beautiful sight to carry me through what followed: After this point we began our hike around the last half of the circuit. About a mile or two down I made a navigation error and we inadvertently got to see over a mile of very UNtraveled path to the edge of the park. After retracing our steps we headed the right direction: A humongous ascent. Hours of walking uphill. We were actually glad to get drenched by the thunderstorms, just to cool off. Finally made it back. Turned out to be a 10 hour hike. The book says you should be in good shape with a lot of energy. Well said. And bring lots of water. 2 and a half quarts for the two of us was NOT enough. "/>
